Hi Alexandr,
Thank you for your email.
Please keep this email in a safe place and refer to it as it contains all the answers that you need if you want to apply to gain electrical registration in New Zealand and the process you must undertake.
If you are looking to work in New Zealand as an Electrician (or another class of registration recognised in New Zealand) your qualifications and work experience that you have gained in your country must be thoroughly assessed by the Electrical Workers Registration Board in order to determine their recognition and suitability for registration.
The registration and licensing requirements in New Zealand are of a high standard and every Electrical Worker must meet this standard before they can be registered. As you already hold qualifications and work experience in your own country this can assessed and exemptions made so you don’t have to repeat all of your training and examinations.
Exemptions are granted on a case by case basis.
Please note: It is recommended that you review the overseas policy and procedures manual to determine whether your qualifications may be recognised in New Zealand. This document is available at this link
http://www.ewrb.govt.nz/assets/EWRB...ns/Recognition-of-overseas-qualifications.pdf
What do you need to do first?
All overseas electrical workers who wish to eventually gain full registration and a practicing license in New Zealand must first fill out a Recognition of Overseas Application form. I have attached a copy of the application form for your convenience.
Once you have completed the application form, you will be required to submit in addition to the form:
1. Certified copies of your qualifications (including any relevant documentation that you believe may beneficial to your application),
2. An employer reference outlining the types of prescribed electrical work in which you have undertaken (in detail) including, a. the amount of hours in which you have completed prescribed electrical work (whether under supervision or independently), and, b. Any special projects related to prescribed electrical work which you may have undertaken.
The references must be on company letterhead and be signed by your employer and be in English. Please note that this work reference should be in such detail that the assessment team can clearly see your competencies in your trade that you have gained. (CV’s, resumes, etc. are not accepted as work references),
3. A certified copy of your passport,
4. Payment for the assessment. Currently the fee associated with this application is NZD350.00. Payment must be made with a NZ approved Credit Card (Visa, MasterCard, Amex), or a cheque drawn on a New Zealand bank made out to the Electrical Workers Registration Board. The assessment starts with the payment.
It is advised that you begin your Registration application as soon as possible, as the process can take 6-8 weeks to complete.
Our assessment team will only accept registration applications that are sent by post. They will not accept any emailed or faxed applications.
When you send in the application form, you can leave the questions relating to the safety training blank at this stage. Competency safety training of Electrical Safety, CPR and First Aid can only be completed in New Zealand.
What happens after the 6-8 weeks assessment period?
The assessment team will write or email you with full instructions on what you need to complete in order to gain full registration and a practicing license.
There are a few options that the letter may contain, and this is dependent on whether your qualifications and work experience has been accepted.
You could also not receive an assessment letter but a request for further information such as further work references if your references or other documents are not detailed or clear enough.
If more detail is required, once you submit that detail it can take up to a further 4 weeks for a reassessment to take place.
The assessment letter may contain an offer of a Limited Certificate. You would have to make an application separately for this Limited Certificate on another application form, and pay another fee of NZD91.00
Once issued this Limited Certificate allows you to work under supervision for a period of time to complete the requirements for full registration as detailed.
You cannot make application for a Limited Certificate unless you have been invited and you cannot be issued this unless you have a Supervisor that holds full registration and a practicing license in New Zealand.
What happens after you receive an offer of a Limited Certificate and it is granted after application?
You would need to complete the coursework and examinations outlined in the letter, and once you have proof of those requirements being completed you can apply for full registration and your practicing license.
This step requires one more form to be filled in, and a practicing license fee to be paid. The cost of the practicing license is dependent on the month and year you apply, so we will guide you as to the costs on that application form relating to when you are ready to apply.
